Phonics

At St Mark's, we use Bug Club Phonics as our chosen systematic synthetic phonics programme to support children in becoming confident, fluent readers. Bug Club Phonics provides a structured and progressive approach to teaching early reading, enabling children to develop secure knowledge of the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and letters or groups of letters (graphemes).
Through daily phonics lessons, children learn to recognise, blend and segment sounds, equipping them with the skills needed to read and spell accurately. The programme is based on extensive research into effective early reading instruction and is fully aligned with current best practice in phonics teaching.
Bug Club's engaging and interactive resources help to make phonics learning enjoyable and accessible for all pupils, providing regular opportunities to practise and apply new skills. This consistent approach ensures that children build strong foundations in reading, supporting their success across the wider curriculum and nurturing a lifelong love of reading.
To further support reading development, children are provided with fully decodable reading books that are carefully matched to their current stage of phonics learning. These books contain only the sounds and words that children have already been taught, enabling them to apply their phonic knowledge successfully and build reading fluency and confidence. As pupils progress through the programme, the books become increasingly challenging, ensuring that every child experiences success while continuing to develop as an independent reader.
