Week Beginning 02/12/19 - TERM TWO

  • This week in English we have been learning to use colons and dashes to introduce further information to our sentences. We are also in the early stages of planning a Christmas story with a plot twist.
  • This week in Maths we have been learning how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to improper fractions.
  • This week in Science we have been learning about thermal insulators - the children have been testing materials to determine which material is the best insulator to keep Santa's hot cocoa warmer for longer.
  • This week in ICT (Computing) we have been creating computer games, using the Kodu Game Lab. The children have carefully decided the objective of their game using their own experiences of gaming, and gaming knowledge.

Week Beginning 25/11/19 - TERM TWO

  • This week in Maths we have been learning how to find equivalent fractions and using that skill to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators.
  • This week in English we have drafted a formal monologue, then edited, improved and published our writing. 
  • This week in Topic we have been studying the world's major rivers - using an atlas, globe and the internet to find out interesting facts.
  • This week in RE we have been learning about the importance of incarnation to Christians and why God felt it important to experience life as a human.

Week Beginning 18/11/19 - TERM TWO

  • This week in Maths we have been learning to estimate and approximate by rounding at speed and calculating mentally with those rounded numbers.
  • This week in English we have been learning about parenthesis (added information) and have been performing monologues.
  • This week in Science we have been investigating which electrical conductors make a bulb shine brightest.
  • This week in RE we have been learning about Jesus as the saviour (Messiah), and the expectations of the Jewish people.

Week Beginning 11/11/19 - TERM TWO

  • This week has been Assessment Week: we have carried out assessments in SPaG, Reading and Maths. The children have worked fantastically hard to showcase their knowledge and skills.
  • This week we celebrated Children in Need 2019 by starting the day with Joe Wicks's Morning Move and then by baking biscuits throughout the day. Photos will be uploaded onto our gallery very soon!

Week Beginning 04/11/19 - TERM TWO

  • This week in English we have been applying our sentence up-levelling skills by creating a short piece of writing on Google Suite.
  • This week in Maths we have been learning to use short division, and interpret remainders. As well as identify prime numbers to 100. 
  • This week in RE we have been learning about the 'Big Story' of the bible and started to map out events in the bible on a timeline.
  • This week in PE we have been learning how to create a strategy to complete a given task - children worked together to create a strategy to work effectively and at speed and learned to evaluate their performance.

Week Beginning 28/10/19 - TERM TWO

  • This week in English we have been creating some wonderfully descriptive sentences using four 'up-levelling' steps. We hope that your child can discuss these with you and is keen to enter this week's writing competition.
  • This week in Maths we have been learning about factors, how to find all of the factors for a number and how to find common factors of two numbers.
  • This week in Computing we have been investigating programming with Kodu Game Lab, learning how to input objects and program objects.
  • This week in Science we have been testing certain properties of materials, such as whether materials are magnetic, permeable, transparent, flexible, and hard.

Week Beginning 14/10/19 - TERM ONE

  • This week in English we have been learning to use subordinate clauses to add information to our sentences - in turn, learning a variety of subordinating conjunctions (ISAWAWABUB).
  • In Maths we have been learning how to quickly and efficiently multiply by multiples of 10 e.g. to multiply by 20 we can first multiply an amount by 2 and then multiply the product by 10.
  • This week in Science, children built a model to help explain the movement of the Moon in relation to the Earth and the Sun. 
  • This week in Topic we have been learning to create a choropleth map, by creating a suitable scale, before using the map to make judgements.

Week Beginning 07/10/19 - TERM ONE

  • This week in English we have been using 'show don't tell' language to describe feelings and features of appearance. Also, we have been learning how to create mystery in our writing.
  • This week in Maths we have been learning about multiples and how to identify multiples of a given number at speed - ask your child what rules they remember for finding multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10.
  • This week in PE, Year 5 children created and performed a sequence of balances and travels (including rolling) on apparatus. 
  • This week in RE, we learned about how churches vary around the world and the features inside and out of a church or cathedral.

Week Beginning 30/10/19 - TERM ONE

  • This week in English we have been writing a setting description. The children have learned that by describing the temperature, sights, noises and smells we can 'paint a picture' in the reader's mind.
  • This week in Maths we have been practising column addition and subtraction: learning how to use the inverse to check answers and find missing numbers, as well as applying these skills to solving a range of multi-step problems.
  • In Science this week we have been learning about 'night and day internationally' and exploring time zones on Earth.
  • In Guided Reading this week we have been learning to improve our inference skills by looking at what characters say and how they behave, and what we can infer from these comments and actions.

Week Beginning 23/09/19 - TERM ONE

  • This week in English we have been learning to start our sentences using a variety of fronted adverbials, using ISPACED, and continue to include expanded noun phrases to add description and detail.
  • This week in Maths we have been learning to calculate with negative numbers (through zero) and have been practising column subtraction and addition.
  • This week in Topic we have been learning about how to stay safe around water, especially near rivers, lakes and seas.
  • This week in Science we have been learning about the planets in our solar system, including the order of the planets from the Sun - ask your child if they can remember the mnemonic!

Week Beginning 16/09/19 - TERM ONE

  • This week in English we have been learning how to recognise and use 'expanded noun phrases' as a way of enhancing our writing. In addition, we continue to revisit our learning of proper nouns.
  • This week in Maths we have been learning to round numbers using our poetic verse to help us.
  • This week in Topic we learned about hop farming in Kent and what work was carried out in oast houses across the county.
  • This week in PE we have been learning a range of balances, and have explored ways to 'move out' of these in order to create a sequence.

Week Beginning 09/09/19 - TERM ONE

  • This week in English we have been learning how to use persuasive devices to create a radio advert for a door stop. The children performed their advert to the rest of the class.
  • This week in Guided Reading we have been learning to retrieve information from our new class text 'Holes' by Louis Sachar.
  • This week in Maths we have been learning to read, write and compare numbers, as well as consolidate our understanding of Roman numerals.
  • This week in Art children have been learning to use step-by-step guides to improve their drawing skills.
