Music

Intent

We provide a music education that emboldens pupils and allows them to enjoy soaring confidence and self esteem. We do this through providing opportunities for appreciation, composition and singing, alongside new opportunities and chances to showcase talents within and beyond our school community. We offer lessons in cornet and fully celebrate those children who choose to take these opportunities in our school.

Implementation

We use the National Curriculum and our self-developed ‘Pilgrim Progress’ assessment procedures provide support for staff and pupils to monitor their progress against the gaining of key skills and knowledge. This important spine allows us to manage our split classes and plan a clear four year cycle of topics and learning that begins with an individual child's starting point. The foundation stones to a successful education lie in the acquisition of basic skills and knowledge.

We use the ‘Charanga’ scheme as a basis for music sessions to ensure that all our EYFS, KS1 & KS2 pupils are exposed to the key knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to fulfil the curriculum whilst providing a range of musical genres and a wealth of opportunities to sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate.

All KS1 children have access to a range of percussion instruments and tuned instruments in Charanga based sessions. Children in KS2 also learn to play instruments alongside their Charanga learning. Year 3 learn to play the glockenspiel.

They also learn how to compose, focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music.
