Weekly News

Week beginning 09/03/20

This week the class have worked extremely hard to complete their assessments to show what they know and what they still need to learn.  They have concentrated so well and have put so much effort in to their tests.  

We have also had some time to start constructing our moving robots in DT.  Stage 1:  Choose the boxes.  Stage 2:  Turn them inside out using our knowledge of nets.  Stage 3:  Paint!

Week beginning 24/02/20

In maths this week we have finished our learning about statistics, answering some really tricky questions about the data shown in tables.

In English we had a debate about whether robots are a good or bad invention and then wrote a balanced argument to discuss the pros and cons.

In DT we started to plan our moving robots and made simple pneumatic systems using syringes and tubes.  

Week beginning 10/04/20

In maths this week we have been learning how to present data in pictograms and interpret the data by answering and asking questions.

In English we wrote an instruction text to explain how to trap the Iron Man.

We were outside this week and have done a great job planting at the allotment.  Take a look at the school gallery to see us in action.

Week beginning 03/02/20

In maths this week we have been calculating change using coins, number lines and column subtraction.

In guided reading we have started the book The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.  We have written some stories, descriptions and letters based on chapters one and two.

We went outside to complete our science learning this week, looking at what soil is made from.

Week beginning 27/02/20

In English this week we have been writing a story based on a short film called The Lighthouse.  I have been so impressed with all the hard work and the finished pieces of writing are fantastic.

In maths we have been practising mental strategies for adding and subtracting in preparation for calculating change next week.

In science we become fossil detectives, investigating what fossils revealed about the past and creating our own from clay.

Week beginning 20/01/20

In maths this week we have been recognising, counting and adding money.

In English we have been writing descriptions using our DADWAVERS sentences.   Ask the children to explain what these are!

We were outside again this week and finished our session with a nice warm cup of hot chocolate.

Week beginning 13/01/20

In English this week we have been writing newspaper reports, concentrating on using inverted commas and conjunctions.

In maths we have been learning to half and double numbers, as well as scale numbers up and down.

In PE we have been using the apparatus sensibly, exploring what we can do and growing in confidence ready to start trying some trickier balances and movements next week.

Week beginning 06/01/20

This week in maths we have been learning how to divide, using partitioning.  We have been such great mathematicians that we have been solving problems involving exchanging and remainders.

In English we were police detectives and wrote a recount about a number of thefts by a curious creature, The Grotlyn.

In computing we have started to use algorithms, making sure that our inputs are accurate so that the outputs are correct!

Week beginning 02/12/19

In English this week we have been writing diary entries based on Michael Morpurgo's Christmas story, Coming Home.

In maths we have been learning how to use the expanded and short method for multiplication.  Everyone has done so well answering some really tricky questions!

In topic and art we are creating a skyline of Eccles, from the past to the present, representing the time periods with different colours.

 

We have been outside again this week, clearing the compost heap so that we can add soil to our allotment. 

 

And finally...we put up our Christmas tree!

 

Week beginning 25/11/19

This week in maths we have been learning how to use the grid method for multiplication.

In English we have been writing letters and typing them, using the correct format, on the computers.

During our outdoor learning session this week we investigated buoyancy and absorbency by designing, making and testing boats.  We used our problem solving skills and worked safely outside.  Playing in the puddles was a popular end to the afternoon!

Week beginning 18/11/19

We are lucky to have welcomed Mrs David to our class this week as our new teaching assistant.  We are looking forward to working with her and know she will be great help to all of us.

In maths this week we have been learning our 3, 4 and 8 times tables.  We have been completing investigations and playing games to help us remember the multiplication and division facts.

In English we wrote a story opening about a secret door that we found in the wild area at school - we wonder where it leads!

Week beginning 11/11/19

In topic this week we were lucky to have a local historian visit us to tell us all about Eccles.  We found out some fascinating information - the favourite being that Eccles used to have a cinema!

In science we investigated magnetic and non-magnetic materials.  We had great fun testing different materials in the classroom and around school.

Week beginning 04/11/19

In maths this week we have learnt how to subtract using a written method, exchanging tens and hundreds.

In English we have written some fantastic story openers and have worked extremely hard to make them exciting and accurate for our readers.  We will be editing them next week and will then be ready to share them!

In science we completed an investigation into friction.  We had lots of fun testing how fast a toy car can travel on different surfaces.

Week beginning 28/10/19

In maths this week we have been perfecting our skills when using a written method to add and applying these skills to solve problems and investigations.

In English we have have worked extremely hard to set the scene and introduce characters when writing a story.  Some of the descriptions were particularly gruesome!

In computing this week we have been learning about internet safety, making sure we know what to do to stay safe.

Week beginning 14/10/19

In maths this week we have been using a formal written method to add 3 digit numbers.

In English we created a character and then wrote some instructions to help them avoid being caught by a vicious cat.  We watched a very funny video to help us with our writing!

In science we tasted and compared some fresh and dried fruit.  The dried banana wasn't very popular!

In art we completed our rainforest pictures using all the skills we have learnt this term.

Week beginning 07/10/19

In maths this week we have been using mental methods to add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100.

In English we have been practising writing commands, being bossy and using imperative verbs ready to write some instructions next week.

In science we have planned a healthy and nutritious meal fit for an astronaut.  We had to think carefully about what could be sent to space!

Week beginning 30/09/19

In maths this week we have been adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers.

In English we wrote a narrative about a boy travelling to space and have challenged ourselves to include adverbs and speech.

In art this week we have been adding to our rainforest pictures, creating texture using collage.

Week beginning 23/09/19

In maths this week we have been ordering and comparing numbers to 1000.

In English we have written a narrative based on our book 'Leon and the Place Between'.

In music we have been learning to play the notes A and B on the recorder and performed some pieces to Hairy Maclary class.

Week beginning 16/09/19

In maths we have been learning to find 1, 10 and 100 more and less than a number.

In English we have been writing poems based on Kit Wright's 'The Magic Box'.

In PE we have been learning to pass a rugby ball with control and accuracy.

Week beginning 09/09/19

In maths we worked in groups to complete an investigation about place value.

In RE we have been looking in the Bible and retelling the story of Noah.
